Mood stabilisers

For lithium, rapid discontinuation is associated with a higher risk of relapse into mania. Guidance recommends reducing gradually over at least four weeks, ideally longer.

Common withdrawal effects

  • Return of mood symptoms
  • Irritability
  • Sleep disruption

Tapering principles

1

Gradual over weeks to months

Studies show slower lithium discontinuation reduces early relapse.

2

Plan with a specialist

Mood stabiliser changes should be coordinated with a psychiatrist.

Before you begin

  • Lamotrigine and valproate are also anti-seizure medications; never stop abruptly.
